Most veterinarians would agree that the Risk of tail injury in adult dogs is eliminated altogether by tail docking when the puppy is only days old.

The banding method is used by many veterinarians to dock puppies. This is a simple and painless procedure which causes no distress to the dam or puppies.

Banding is done at 2-5 days old; a special rubber band is placed on the tail, this restricted blood supply to the trailing end of the tail. Puppies do not feel any irritation or discomfort while sitting or undergoing athletic activities. After about 3 days the tail end will fall off.
